AIM: The present study aimed to investigatethe relationship between nurses' burnoutlevels and caring behaviors during theCOVID-19 pandemic.METHOD: This descriptive and crosssectional study was performed with 136nurses working in three pandemic hospitalsin Istanbul. The data were collected with the“General Information Form,” “MaslachBurnout Inventory,” and “Caring BehaviorsInventory-24.”RESULTS: The nurses' mean total score onthe Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was38.61±12.90, and the mean total score on theCaring Behaviors Inventory-24 (CBI-24) was5.09±0.64. It was identified that the meanMBI rank of the nurses who predominantlyworked in shifts was statistically significantlyhigher than the other groups (p<0.05). Themean CBI-24 rank of the nurses with 2-5 years of experience was found to besignificantly higher compared to the othergroups (p<0.05). A moderate negativecorrelation was detected between the nurses'MBI total score and CBI-24 total score (r=-0.506) (p<0.01).CONCLUSION: In line with the studyresults, it was revealed that nursesexperienced a high level of emotionalexhaustion, and a moderate negativecorrelation was found between nurses'burnout levels and their perception of carequality. It can be said that the perception ofcaring behavior decreases with the increasedburnout levels of nurses providing care topatients diagnosed with COVID-19.Interventions to reduce the burnout levels ofnurses will increase the professionalcommitment and job satisfaction of nursesand will be effective in providing qualitycare.

Sepsis is defined as life-threatening organdysfunction resulting from unregulated hosteffect on the infection. Despite new advancesin treatments, the morbidity and mortality ofsepsis continues to be high today. One of themain causes of septic cells morbidity anddeath is cardiac and vascular rupture andconsequent generalized tissue hypoxia.Sepsis, which is one of the most commoncauses of non-cardiac deaths in intensivecare units in developed countries, increasesthe number of secondary infections withimmunosuppression and thus increases thecost. Since most sepsis symptoms arenonspecific, the diagnosis of sepsis may bedelayed. However, there is no specifictreatment that has proven effective for sepsis.Patients with sepsis need more nutrients andenergy. As a result of insufficient energyintake in sepsis, malnutrition occurs in theindividual due to the lack of energy andnutrients for cells in organ systems.Nutritional support should be provided inpatients with sepsis due to increased energyconsumption, acceleration in catabolism andhyperdynamic circulation. In addition, drugtreatments applied to patients also cause anincrease in energy requirement. Withnutritional support, carbohydrates and fatsare provided as energy sources. Proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals are alsoused in nutritional support for cell buildingblocks and functions. Appropriate nutritionalintervention should be performed dependingon whether the gastrointestinal system of theindividual with sepsis is functioning or not.Enteral nutrition is the safest way of feedingthe patient. In patients with severe andprolonged catabolic period, parenteralnutrition is applied in cases where enteralnutrition cannot be performed due to thedeterioration of the anatomical or functionalintegrity of the gastrointestinal system.Malnutrition can be corrected in thesepatients by providing effective andcomprehensive early nutritional therapy. It isaimed to prevent increased destruction, secondary infections, multi-organ failure, morbidity and mortality with nutritionalsupport to individuals with sepsis. In thisreview, types of sepsis and nutritionaltreatments in patients with sepsis will beevaluated.
